Edwardian 15ct Gold Garnet & Diamond Drop Necklace, c.1905–1915
A fine Edwardian 15ct gold garnet and diamond drop necklace, dating to 1905–1915. Designed in yellow and white gold, the necklace features two richly coloured red to purplish-red garnets accented by two antique-cut diamonds, arranged in an elegant articulated drop typical of early 20th-century jewellery.
The necklace centres on a round faceted garnet set between the fine yellow gold chain. Suspended beneath is a slender white gold bar leading to an elongated openwork marquise-shaped drop, centred by a larger oval faceted garnet. Two round antique-cut diamonds are set above and below the principal stone in contrasting white gold, enhancing their brightness against the warm yellow gold and deep colour of the garnets.
The restrained geometry, fine openwork and use of white gold around the diamonds are characteristic of the increasingly light and linear jewellery fashionable during the Edwardian period. The articulated construction gives the pendant subtle movement when worn, while the 42 cm chain places the drop neatly at the base of the neck.
A particularly elegant and wearable example of Edwardian garnet jewellery, combining the rich colour associated with traditional garnet jewels with the delicacy and contrasting white-set diamonds of early 20th-century design.
